Radio The Beat 99.9 FM (The Beat FM) began broadcasting in Lagos in 2003, under the ownership of Megalectrics Ltd, and was designed to capture the pulse of Nigeria’s youth through music, entertainment, and lifestyle programming delivered in English.
Dubbed “The Heartbeat of Lagos,” it distinguished itself early by becoming the first African radio station verified on Twitter, marking a pioneering digital presence. Over time, it introduced Beat TV, a YouTube counterpart extending its brand into visual media.
The station’s evolution continued through key leadership shifts—former Programs Director Olisa Adibua shaped its early tone, succeeded by Toolz (Tolu Oniru-Demuren) in 2020—highlighting its adaptability in programming.
Beat FM remains a cultural staple across Lagos with charismatic presenters such as Maria Okanrende, Toolz, and Osi Suave, whose shows like “The Morning Rush,” “Midday Show,” and “Sports Extra” maintain tight connections with Nigerian pop culture, fashion, and youth sentiment.
